Why are American cops so murderous?

Historic rates of fatal police shootings in Europe suggest that American police in 2014 were 18 times more lethal than Danish police and 100 times more lethal than Finnish police, plus they killed significantly more frequently than police in France, Sweden and other European countries.

One of the prime factors is that in America there are more guns and more aggression. Aggression is seen as a way of life. Aggression is “manly” and praised as a way to resolve differences and settle scores, as we see all the time in our favorite movies and TV shows. That comes out in the way police deal with citizens.

And, America has more guns per person than any other industrialized nation. We are armed to the teeth, and arming ourselves more and more every day.

But there are other factors too, like racism – but not just racism alone. Also, police are given a lot more leeway in ramping situations up to fatal shootings long before less lethal means are even tried.
