South Carolina’s Confederate flag was taken down today… then put back up

A woman climbed a flagpole in front of the South Carolina Statehouse Saturday morning and took down the Confederate battle flag. The flag was flying again about 45 minutes later.

Bree Newsome, the woman who pulled down the flag, said in a statement released by the activist group Blackbird, “We removed the flag today because we can’t wait any longer.”

Newsome now faces a charge of defacing monuments on state Capitol grounds, carrying a possible fine of up to $5,000 and up to three years in prison.
