Stephen Colbert to replace David Letterman

I predicted it — CBS has just announced that Stephen Colbert will replace David Letterman when he retires.

No departure date for Letterman has been announced yet, other than “sometime next year.” And Colbert’s contract with Comedy Central is up at the end of this year. I’m surprised that CBS announced it this soon, but not surprised at their choice.

Here’s Colbert’s statement:

“Simply being a guest on David Letterman’s show has been a highlight of my career,” Colbert said in a statement. “I never dreamed that I would follow in his footsteps, though everyone in late night follows Dave’s lead.” He added: “I’m thrilled and grateful that CBS chose me. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I have to go grind a gap in my front teeth.”
